Our newest member to go under the Member Spotlight is Austin Carr. His brother may tell you that he's an undercover agent, but he's actually the NOC Manager at Uniti Fiber. Austin has been a member since October 2016 and you can most often find him in our Packet Networking forum.
Get to know a little more about Austin in his Member Spotlight interview below and then ask him questions on loops, testing, configs, best practices for CESD and OneControl in the comments. Don't forget to also connect with him through follow on his profile.
1. What is your current role? How did you get started in the industry?
I am currently the NOC Manager at Uniti Fiber, is a leading provider of infrastructure solutions, including cell site backhaul and small cell for wireless operators, and Ethernet, Wavelengths and Dark Fiber for telecom carriers and enterprises.
My entry into the industry started many years ago when I joined the military. My job and experiences in the military helped me discover and refine a love for both technology and people that lead me to the industry, company, and position I am in today.
2. What your favorite sources of information to do your job?
Reading, training, certifications, and community discussion boards are a significant source of information when it comes to my job. Frequently researching and posting on discussion boards has often helped me find the direction needed to complete a task or overcome a hurdle. However, people I work with (both inside and outside my company) have been a major source of information. Colleagues’ experience and knowledge has been invaluable over the years.
3. What projects or initiatives are you looking forward to working on this year, or you're most proud of accomplishing in the past?
Over the past year we rolled out the Ciena 8700s in several major markets and completed converted an entire school system of 52 sites off of another vendor onto Ciena CESD products. The school’s network has been extremely stable since making the move and the school board has been very happy with the service provided.
In the coming year, we are working on merging five companies into one due to some recent acquisitions by Uniti Fiber. This will be a significant challenge which I am both excited about and anxious to take on. I feel like we are about to climb a major mountain and I eager to take on the challenge.
4. If we ask your family and friends, what would they say you do at work?
One friend would say I am working on and in the Matrix. The first time he saw me working at my computer he couldn’t believe what he saw…I was simply in the CLI of a switch looking at the code, but he thought it was impressive.
My wife would say she doesn’t know what I do at work. She just knows I work in the field of technology and have a facility that kind of looks like a NASA center with all the big screen TVs.
My brother thinks I am an undercover agent and my job is my cover.
5. What are some of the topics that you're most interested in discussing in the community?
Security and SDN of NFV are the hot topics I am tracking. However, I’d like to continue to see some discussions of basic Ciena functions and underlying philosophy in the community. The community has been a great resource to simply learn and understand how Ciena’s OS works. I’d also like to see continued discussion of learning and how to keep learning on Ciena’s line.
6. What should Ciena Community members ask you about?
Loops, testing, configs, best practices for CESD are all areas I’ve grown in and may be able to help with. I’ve also learned a good bit about OneControl and how to implement OneControl in a network.
7. What else would you like people to know about you?
I have loved and been fascinated about technology from day one. It’s something that I have always been interested in as long as I can remember. However, I also grew up loving people and being an extravert. One of my degrees is in psychology which has helped me tremendously when working with people in the field of telecom and technology. I love what I do day in and day out and I enjoy helping others if I can be of help.
Thank you for being a member and going under the member spotlight, Austin!
