What is your current role? How did you get started in the industry?
My current role is a network analyst for a wholesale internet provider. After working in a helpdesk role for a hospital for a couple of years I was ready for a change and had never done any in depth networking - three years later here I am, deep in the nitty gritty.
What are your favorite sources of information to do your job?
I really do enjoy the Ciena forum as it is specific to the equipment we use network wide. I also use vendor specific forums for other manufacturers we use. I utilize Reddit quite a bit to stay up on current news and stretch my knowledge. Then there are number of industry specific Telecom news sites that tend to be more regulatory then technical.
What projects, or initiatives, are you looking forward to working, or you’re most proud of accomplishing?
I have two very Ciena specific projects that I am in the process of and have coming up.
- We are currently upgrading a number of our nodes with new fiber patch panels and newer switches to either handle faster speeds or more distribution.
- We have a lab we are finishing putting together that will allow us to do some testing on creating and tearing down rings and subrings so that I can move forward with creating subrings on about 100 or so 3930s for redundant paths. I need some proving grounds before I go hog wild with this one.
If we ask your friends and family, what would they say you do at work?
I control the internet in my county with a keystroke or as my coworker likes to say - Internet plumber.
What’s your favorite breakfast cereal?
Hot grapenuts with just a smidge of sugar.
What should Ciena Community members ask you about?
Professionally? I love processes and documenting. If you need help putting together manuals or directions - I really enjoy this stuff (Just ask my boss who I harass to put stuff into the Wiki had created just for this reason). I'm still learning a lot on the technical side, but I'm pretty confident with the concepts of rings/subrings, VLANs and flow of traffic.
Personally? Wanna talk horses or good microbrews (IPA=yuck!) I'm your gal.
